Sergeant Lansford was a member of the Marine Raiders, said to be the first US special operations forces to form and see combat in World War II. Lansford served with the 2nd Marine Raider Battalion on Guadalcanal, and Bougainville where he was promoted to sergeant and in the 5th Marine Division on Iwo Jima.
