On 10 September 1984, Pope John Paul II met with a group of Indigenous peoples at the National Shrine of Saint Anne de Beaupré in which he also spoke a few words in their languages. Three years later on 20 September 1987, before celebrating Mass with indigenous peoples at Fort Simpson, he greeted them in one of their own languages.
