The Art of Taboo: 任航（レン・ハン）- Ren Hang

中国は北京在住の27歳、写真家・任航（Ren Hang）。彼が繰り広げるヌードフォトには、常に中国当局の監視がつきまとう。写真展の検閲、撮影中の逮捕劇、ウェブサイトの強制閉鎖......。それでも彼がヌード写真を続けるのは、ひとえに彼の下を訪れるモデル志望の若者たちが絶えないことも挙げられるかもしれない。

抑圧の中においても自己表現を求めて止まない中国の若者たちの姿、心境、そしてその証言を映像に収めるため、VICEは今回、中国は北京市にある任航の自宅を訪れた。そこに待ち受けていたのは、決して狭くはない室内を埋め尽くすフレッシュな北京女子たちの生き生きとした姿。かくして、任航による現実を超越した撮影が幕を開けた。

もちろん任航が語ってくれた話も今後、貴重な証言となるだろう。中国国内におけるヌード表現はいかなる状況にあるのか？ それでも任航が続ける理由とは――？ 透き通った眼差しの奥底に潜む、若き中国人の生き様に迫る。

27 year old Chinese photographer Ren Hang takes photographs that show an unseen raw and hedonistic side to Chinese youth. He is based in Beijing where the graphic nature of his photos mean he has had cameras confiscated by police, pictures spat on at exhibitions and banned from every gallery in the city by the censorship-heavy Chinese authorities. His portrait photographs are straightforward and non-evasive in their display of graphic homosexuality, nudity, and obscene bodily contortionism. Yet it would be a mistake to think he simply aims to shock.

In Art of Taboo Episode 2 we spoke with Ren Hang and his models during a shoot at his Beijing apartment before night fell, and headed into the woods for a shoot that showed just how undeterred he is by the forces of censorship in his home country.
