世界中の放射線データを共有する機械 - Safecast: Build Your Own Geiger Counter

3.11以降、日本人にとって「放射能」という単語は無意識的に恐怖を駆り立てる言葉となっている。震災直後に各メディアが騒ぎ立て、誰もがどの情報を信頼していいのか分からない状況が長く続く中、一部のITやテクノロジー通が東京に集いSafecastを立ち上げた。

彼らは誰にでもアクセス可能な、信頼のおける放射能測定値を集計する為に、ガイガーカウンタを自作できるキットを編み出し、多くの人の手にその装置を渡らせることに成功した。いまや彼らの公開する情報はどの政府発表よりも精密なものとなっている。

今回VICEは東京で開かれた彼らのワークショップに参加し、その活動と理念に迫った。

Ever since the 3.11 earthquake and the disaster at Fukushima. People in Japan have rightfully become increasingly in need of transparent radiation data. Safecast is one group providing a solution to this. They have created a global sensor and volunteer network for collecting and sharing radiation measurements, empowering people with data about their environment. They have also developed a consumer geiger kit that anyone can assemble and then use to publish radiation readings. We went to one of their workshops to build one for ourselves.
