During the Second World War, the US and Japan had fought in the Philippines, which produced thousands of causalities on both sides. Since then, the Japanese government has developed a program to retrieve the bones of the dead soldiers during that era with a yearly budget of $700K. However, the program wasn't as successful as they had hoped for, inducing the government to collaborate with the locals to help dig up the lost bones.
We traveled to Malica, where 4,600 Japanese soldiers and 3,200 American soldiers were killed on the battlefield. Santos, one of the locals who we met during our trip, is a so-called 'bone hunter' with 12 years on the job. He has found thousands of bones during work, including grenades, drugs, swords, guns, toothbrushes, gold teeth, among other things.
