Hong Kong is experiencing one of the biggest protests since China took back sovereignty of the territory. The trigger is: The Extradition Law.
Proposed by Hong Kong’s Chief Executive, Carrie Lam, and following Beijing's directives, this is a law that would allow for the extradition of Hong Kong citizens to be tried and, if applicable, imprisoned in mainland China.
In other words, this proposed Law would recognize the validity of the courts controlled by the Chinese Communist Party. And even though in the end, after pressure from the protesters, the proposed law was withdrawn, it’s a clear example of how things are starting to work in Hong Kong. Because perhaps the worst isn’t the Extradition Law, but how China has made Hong Kong cease to be Hong Kong.
