The border between the Dominican Republic and Haiti has historically been one of the most tense in the world. Since independence, attacks followed one after another until the 1929 peace agreement and the end of hostilities in 1942.
However, Haitian gangs, which have now taken control of Port-au-Prince, and a new dispute between the two countries over water in the 55-kilometre stretch of the Massacre River that separates them, have revived border tensions that seemed to be a thing of the past.
How did this atypical and controversial border come to be established? What is the Dominican Republic doing to try to curb the rise of Haitian gangs? Why are the two Spanish-speaking countries at loggerheads over water? Today we tell you.
