Prosecutors said Anderson arranged a $13,000 bonus for a staffer on the condition that more than half be returned to her in cash, meeting secretly at City Hall to collect the money. The scheme was uncovered while she was already facing a state ethics fine for hiring immediate family members. Anderson, who became the first Muslim and former undocumented immigrant elected to the council, tearfully apologized in court but later criticized the media outside the courthouse. Prosecutors argued she showed a repeated “pattern of greed, deceit and abuse of power,” while her defense sought probation. The judge ultimately imposed prison time, restitution, and supervised release.
