He has been on a campaign to expose the corruption and se*ting scandal in his former department. Austin is in the Marine Reserves and is a former police officer. He is currently suing the Dunwoody GA Police Department for wrongful termination.
We spoke about ways to hold the police accountable, his thoughts on the Defund and Abolish movements, and why policemen pushing for reform are by and large former military.
The problem gets complicated being put into practice, the rhetoric for Defund the Police can be convoluted and misinterpreted. Austin's thoughts are that Defunding should focus on upper management, and go further in auditing the budgets of city and state. His fear is that without expanding the concept of Defund it risks affecting lower-ranking officers and their pay which is already close to the poverty line in some areas.
