The thing is that Trump is threatening to impose a 10% tax on all imports. This could be very damaging to Germany, as its economy is export-oriented. Germany is becoming increasingly lonely. To the east, it faces an expansionist Russia that could attack a NATO member state within a decade. And its western neighbour and closest ally, France, is mired in political uncertainty after snap elections and a hung parliament that has weakened President Emmanuel Macron.
