Officials reported unusually high turnout. Democrats flipped at least two seats in the state Senate and at least five in the House of Delegates to take majorities in both.
Ghazala Hashmi (D) became the first Muslim woman elected to Virginia's state senate. Suhas Subramanyam (D) defeated Republican Bill Drennan in the 87th House District. Subramanyam is the first Indian-American elected to the General Assembly. Dan Helmer (D) was elected to the House of Delegates in the 40th District. He beat longtime incumbent and Republican Caucus Chair Del. Tim Hugo.
