Sparked by more than 20,000 lightning strikes and intensified by record-breaking heat, fires have erupted all over the state, spewing large columns of smoke and fouling air quality. The fires and evacuations continued expanding on Aug. 19.
San Francisco elevated its air quality alert status to red, meaning people are encouraged to stay indoors with windows and doors shut, especially those who most endangered by poor air quality, such as children, older adults and anyone with respiratory ailments.
