Trump plead not guilty to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in connection to 2016 hush money payments made to adult-film actress Stormy Daniels. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and his investigative team are probing whether Trump falsified business records in a way that could constitute a campaign finance violation. Trump is the first ex-president to be charged with a crime.
Former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen said he paid $130,000 to Daniels to keep her quiet about the alleged affair with Trump ahead of his 2016 campaign, but was later reimbursed by the ex-president. Those payments were erroneously classified as legal fees, previous investigations have found.
Trump, who is seeking to return to the White House in 2024 and leading in most polls of Republican voters, is also the focus of criminal probes in Georgia and D.C. Those cases are related to efforts to overturn Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory and Trump’s handling of classified material at Mar-a-Lago, his Florida home and private club.
