Mifepristone was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2000. Administered in the first 10 weeks of pregnancy, it works by blocking the hormone progesterone, which the uterus needs to support a fertilized egg. It’s taken along with the drug misoprostol, which causes uterine contractions that expel the pregnancy. A large body of research has shown the medication to be safe and overwhelmingly effective.
