as posted by the channelNew Yorkers gathered in Washington Square Park on Dec. 30 to mourn the New York City transit system's MetroCard, which is being replaced by OMNY, a contactless system that lets people tap their credit card or phone to pay for rides. The last day to buy or refill a MetroCard was Dec. 31, 2025. Existing MetroCards will continue to be accepted into 2026.
The farewell service was complete with a moment of silence, a MetroCard-themed cake and a spreading of ashes.
"This little card of mine, I'm gonna let it swipe," sang the group of mourners.
