0:54Now PlayingEmperor penguins are threatened by shrinking sea ice in Antarctica, according to the British Antarctic Survey. The scientists observed the birds’ molting sites and found that when the ice breaks out from under the penguins when they are without their waterproof feathers, they can become hypothermic in the water.
“This is totally new to us,” Peter Fretwell, lead author of the British Antarctic Survey, said on Feb. 24. “We could never see the emperor penguin molting sites before and it's only because the sea ice has contracted that we can, we can actually monitor them over this time period.”
