Protesters try to keep Iran women’s soccer team in Australia, citing safety concerns

Protesters, fearing for the safety of the Iranian women's soccer team returning home from Australia after they stood silently while the Iranian national anthem played during an Asian Cup match, temporarily blocked a bus believed to be carrying the team on March 10.

The night before, Australia granted asylum to five members of the Iranian women’s soccer team, after a days-long operation involving federal police and other government agencies.

“We’re willing to provide assistance to other women in the team, noting that this is a very delicate situation and it is up to them," said Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. "But we say to them, if you want our help, help is here and we will provide that.”
