as posted by the channelThe imagery is far from the austere puritanism of her childhood, which was dominated by the strict conventions of her family’s faith in the doctrines of an apocalyptic American sect of fundamentalist Christianity. Her thoughts fractured her sentences a little as she described her experience. She said, “I grew up as a Jehovah’s Witness, based on the Christian idea of a father figure, white bearded guy in the sky, and for me leaving that religion… I went atheist for a while… then I was figuring out my way through my art.” There were serious consequences to her departing the ranks of the believers, which closed tightly behind her. Jehovah’s Witnesses follow the tradition of shunning anyone who has the audacity to find other paths, and Yata’s mother chose faith over family, and spurned her daughter. The rejection hurt her. She said, “…one of the hardest things was getting shunned by my mother, and that American side of my family.”
