William McKinley, 25th President of the United States, is a forgotten president to many - but in this autobiographical monologue he argues he shouldn’t be.
McKinley was born in Ohio and served in the Civil War, the last President to do so. He was governor of Ohio from 1892-1896, became known as an advocate of protectionism and the gold standard, then served as president from 1897 until 1901, when he was assassinated by anarchist Leon Czolgosz not long after McKinley's re-election. His presidency was generally popular and marked by economic growth; he was known for waging the Spanish American war, the first major American war after the Civil War, and acquiring territories of Hawaii, the Philippines, Cuba, Puerot Rico, and Guam. He also imposed tariffs for the purpose of increasing US competitiveness over foreign industries. However, after his death, his vice president, Teddy Roosevelt, assumed the presidency, and the popularity and outsized personality of Roosevelt quickly overshadowed McKinley’s legacy.
