Recently, New Orleans mayor Mitch Landrieu announced the removal of statues of confederate leaders Robert E. Lee, P.G.T Beauregard, and Jefferson Davis on the grounds that they serve to glorify leaders who fought to uphold slavery and send an unwelcoming message to minorities. While some argue that this constitutes an erasure of history, he noted that no similar monuments to New Orleans's history of slavery and segregation existed. He also said the intent of erecting the confederate statues in New Orleans was not for historical reasons, but to venerate them and the lost cause of the Confederacy.
However, caught in all the debate has been the statues, which haven't done anything wrong except commemorate confederate soldiers and politicians who rebelled against the United States to preserve slavery like once 150 years ago. Currently, the statues are in a shelter for confederate memorials. Would you be willing to rescue them? Could they still have life left in them yet?
