as posted by the channelThe #NoConfederate campaign is calling for HBO to cancel its new TV show Confederate, which imagines what would have happened if the Confederacy won the Civil War. Do you think HBO should cancel it? Let us know and subscribe for more videos!
HBO has announced a new series called Confederate to be produced by Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss with Nichelle Tramble Spellman and Malcom Spellman. Although the show has not been shot or even written yet, it's already come under heavy criticism. April Reign, the creator of the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag campaign, has helped created #NoConfederate, a campaign designed to get HBO to cancel plans for the show. She argues that it is insensitive to the real people of color who still experience racism. Other activists like Ta-Nehisi Coates and Roxane Gay have joined the chorus, with Gay calling Confederate "Slavery Fan Fiction."
On the other hand, they are judging a TV show before it has even been written. The Spellmans are both black, and there's little indication the show is intended to glorify the Confederacy. Are the activists simply censoring art and denying artists the opportunity to explore a controversial topic? Why is a campaign to cancel it necessary - shouldn't people be free to watch what interests them? Or not watch?
