YouTube Description
as posted by the channelToday I visited the town of Rashid, Egypt. Between 1798-1801 Napoleon Bonaparte campaigned in Egypt with the purpose of controlling the entire Mediterranean and threatening the British’s hold on India.
On July 15 1799, while reinforcing and renovating the citadel at Rashid, a French officer stumbled upon the large engraved stone built into the foundation. Seeing its possible significance it was moved and stored. Upon Napoleon’s defeat and under the Treaty of Alexandria the stone became British property.
It wouldn’t be until 1822 when the French scholar Jean-Francois Champollion was able to figure out how to back translate the Greek and Demotic when the secret of how to read hieroglyphics was cracked.
