What's Going on With Shipping?
March 3, 2022
On this episode, Sal Mercogliano - former merchant mariner and maritime historian at Campbell University - discusses the seizure and sinking of the Estonian-owned MV Helt by the Russian Navy off the port of Odessa by mines. An examination is made of past and current operations in the Black Sea, Sea of Azov and Kerch Strait and the most recent attack on the Bangledesh-bulk carrier Banglar Samriddhi and the fall of the port Kyerson.
Other topics examined included the impact of the closing of Ukrainian ports, sanctions against Russian-flagged and owned ships, and the decision by the Federal Maritime Commission and Department of Justice to investigate the nine large container firms on world trade. The loss of containers, commodities, and ships means higher freight and cargo costs, translating into inflation. Finally, we examine the pursuit and seizure of Russian yachts around the world.
