In this episode, Sal Mercogliano - former merchant mariner and maritime historian at Campbell University - examines the Top 5 Maritime Stories as of April 26, 2022. First, according to Windward, 1 in 5 containerships around the world are stuck waiting outside congested ports. This leads to the question are we setting up for a Global Supply Chain Crisis 2.0 or are we at the end of the COVID-driven shipping boom? Second, last week shipping stocks trounced the Dow transport average, but this week they sank. Concurrently, shipping lines are shifting their ships and routes to accomodate changes. Third, the Ukraine-Russia War contiues to spill over into the Black Sea with Russian goods continuing to flow out of the Don River and Novorossiysk, while mines threathen ships sailing out of central Europe via the Danube River. Will the Black Sea of the 2020s become the Persian Gulf of the 1980s? Fourth, China lockdowns may be the cause for the trucking downturn in the US. With shutdowns in China, will the eventual wave heading to the US create a shockwave as it did last year? Finally, the Federal Maritime Commission has undertaken a review of ocean carrier export services and is aiming to bring transparency to shipper and carrier data.
