In this episode, Sal Mercogliano - former merchant mariner and maritime historian at Campbell University - discusses the major issues and topics facing global shipping as of May 25, 2022. First, the World Trade Organization sees a darkened outlook for the global economy with rising pressure on the supply chain and congestion in the major ports. Second, container shipping earned a 'Mind-Bending' $59.3 Billion profit in the 1st quarter of 2022, while ILWU and PMA delayed negotiations and more cargo shifts to the East and Gulf coasts from the West Coast. Third, the ongoing oil, gas, and diesel inflation is being fueled by many factors including the ongoing Ukraine-Russia War. Fourth, the International Labor Organization brokers a raise in seafarer minimum wage and ensures internet. Finally, the option for green coffee may be a voyage by sailing ship.
