What's Going on With Shipping?
June 7, 2022
In this episode, Sal Mercogliano - former merchant mariner and maritime historian at Campbell University - discusses the major issues and topics facing global shipping as of June 7, 2022. First, the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine has endanged the world's food supply, specifically grain. Efforts to open Ukranian ports has led to several options being proposed by the different sides. Second, sanctions against Russian oil and energy, has forced Russia to offer low cost oil to countries, increasing their exports while their revenue falls. Third, with the easing of COVID restrictions in China, what impact will that have in US and European ports and to freight rates. Fourth, Bangledesh has suffered a series of setbacks including a massive fire in a major container trans-shipment hub and deaths in their ship scrapping facility. Finally, Admiral Linda Fagan became the first head of an armed service as she assumed command of the US Coast Guard.
