In this episode, Sal Mercogliano - former merchant mariner and maritime historian at Campbell University - discusses the EPIC demonstration of seamanship and valor by a group of mariners to save the passengers and crew on board the excursion boat Spirit of Norfolk. The fire on board required an at sea transfer of 108 personnel to the Victory Rover, another tour boat in Hampton Roads. Concurrently, the outbound bulk vessel Spar Lyra had to maneuver to avoid the on fire tour boat and subsquently lost power. As the Spar Lyra headed toward the docks at Naval Operating Base Norfolk, the tugs Z-One, Fort Bragg and Condor maneuvered the ship back into the channel and prevented a possible collision with the destroyer USS Mason or MSC Oiler USNS Leroy Grumman.
