In this episode, Sal Mercogliano - former merchant mariner and maritime historian at Campbell University - examines the decision by the break-away Donetsk People's Republic to seize six ships captured in the port of Mariupol and take possesssion of them as their own. They recently contacted two of the owners - one Ukrainian and another British - of the loss of the ships and the “forcible appropriation of movable property with forced conversion into state property”. A total of six ships are the subject of this:
Blue Star I (Panama registry - Ukranian owned)
Smarta (Liberian registry - British owned)
Tzarevna (Malta registry - ??? owned)
Azburg (Dominica registry - Turkish owned)
Azov Concord (Malta registry - Turkish owned)
Lady Augusta (Jamacia registry - Lebanon owned)
The issue will be whether the ships sail into international waters either in the Black Sea or via the Turkish Straits into the Aegean and what response will there be from the flags of registry, the owner nations, the International Maritime Organization or those of the nations that ensure the freedom of the seas. The ships have been seized and nationalized under questionable terms and count amount from piracy to the medieval right of angary.
