What The Ship (Ep52) | Hurricane Fiona & Ian | Container Rates | Nord Stream | FSO Safer | NSMV
What's Going on with Shipping?
September 28, 2022
In this episode, Sal Mercogliano - maritime historian at Campbell University and former merchant mariner - discusses the top 5 maritime stories as of September 28, 2022, and celebrates the one-year anniversary of What the Ship. The first story examines the impacts of Hurricanes Fiona on Puerto Rico and Ian on Florida, with an emphasis on issues around the Jones Act and maritime transportation. Second, a discussion on the cliff dive of ocean container rates, particularly in the trans-Pacific trade. While the fall is remarkable, the question is what does the shift to the East/Gulf coats mean for the supply chain. Third, the Baltic Sea begins to boil as natural gas escapes from both the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines. What impact will this have on LNG transport to LNG and the world? Fourth, the United Nations is close to having enough funds to deal with the FSO Safer off the coast of Yemen. Finally, the launch by the Maritime Administration of the first of five National Security Multi-Mission Vessels for United States maritime state academies.
