In this episode, Sal Mercogliano - maritime historian at Campbell University and former merchant mariner - discusses the role of Sealift (the use of commercial merchant vessels) in the Spanish-American War. At the start of the war, the US Navy drew upon the vessels under the Postal Mail Act of 1891 as auxiliary cruisers. The Army Quartermaster Corps leased vessels from the commercial merchant marine as troop transports and cargo ships to embark forces for Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines. To maintain its new territory, the US Army created a fleet of commercial vessels known as the Army Transport Service and to sustain the naval forces, the Navy created the Collier Service.
