What's Going on With Shipping?
November 27, 2022
In this episode, Sal Mercogliano - maritime historian at Campbell University and former merchant mariner - discusses the top 5 Maritime Stories as of November 26, 2022. First, multiple issues are poised to hit the #supplychain with a new round of China COVID shutdowns, strikes in Korea and India, and the potential for a US rail strike. Second, the opposition of Poland, Estonia, Lithuanian and Latvia to the price cap set by the G7 and European Union jeopardizes the implementation of the sanctions set to take place on December 5. Third, Maersk Lines finds itself the target of a lawsuit under the new powers of the Federal Maritime Commission, granted under the Ocean Shipping Reform Act of 2022. Fourth, a new report finds fire, inflation and global warning as the greatest threat to shipping and therefore increasing insurance rates. Finally, the Port of Miami, much like the rest of the Gulf and East Coast ports are benefitting from the shift of cargo from the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.
