1:22Now Playing► The Air France Flight 4590 crash was the beginning of the end for the Concorde supersonic jet. In this video, aviation attorney Paul Hedlund is interviewed by KCAL Los Angeles to discuss the tragic aviation disaster that ultimately led to the demise of the Concorde.
On July 25, 2000, Air France Flight 4590 was scheduled to transport passengers from Charles de Gaulle International Airport near Paris, France to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City. Shortly after takeoff, the Concorde airliner crashed in Gonesse, France. All 109 souls on the plane perished, along with four people on the ground.
Investigators found that the Concorde ran over a piece of debris during takeoff, which cut one of the plane’s tires. A chunk of the tire flew underneath one of the wings, which caused one of the fuel tanks to rupture. The leaking fuel was likely ignited by either coming into contact with hot parts of the engine or an electric arc in the landing gear.
Three years after the Air France Flight 4590 crash, the Concorde was retired from commercial aviation.
