The press conference was held by Kennedy and the law firm of Baum, Hedlund, Aristei & Goldman in support of the State of California Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA), which was named in a lawsuit by agricultural giant Monsanto.
Monsanto filed a lawsuit against OEHHA in 2016 over California’s notice of intent to list glyphosate as a chemical “known to the state cause cancer” in accordance with Proposition 65. Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Roundup.
In this video (the third of four covering the Jan. 27 press conference), Mr. Kennedy discusses the history of Monsanto, including its first product, saccharine, as well as the toxicity of PCBs, Agent Orange and glyphosate.
In 2015, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) published a report on glyphosate, which found the chemical to be a “probable human carcinogen.” This report was the basis for OEHHA to issue a notice of intent to list glyphosate as a Prop 65 chemical.
In his speech, Mr. Kennedy also details Monsanto’s marketing and PR campaigns, which have been designed to silence independent, peer-reviewed science that calls into question the safety of glyphosate.
Mr. Kennedy is currently working with Baum Hedlund in representing those who have been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma after using Roundup. The Roundup cancer lawsuits allege that Monsanto has long known about the link between Roundup and cancer but buried the health risks.
