On Oct. 12, 2017, European Parliament held a public hearing discussing the Monsanto Papers and glyphosate, the active ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup weed killer.
Glyphosate is the most widely-used agricultural chemical in the world. However, concerns have been raised over the chemical’s link to cancer.
In this hearing held by the Environment (ENVI) and Agriculture (AGRI) Committees in the EU Parliament, legislators, public health advocates, scientists and others convened to provide expert analysis on glyphosate, with particular attention paid to the stunning revelations from the Monsanto Papers, which can be viewed in their entirety here
The video above includes a presentation by Dr. Christopher Portier of Maastricht University, who discusses glyphosate animal cancer studies. According to Portier, there are 21 total available animal carcinogenicity studies for glyphosate. Most reviews have concluded that nine of the studies have limitations that exclude them consideration but the remaining 12 are acceptable.
Of these 12 acceptable glyphosate animal bioassays, Dr. Portier says there are a total of 34 tumor sites that should have been identified and discussed. Ten of these statistically significant findings have not been discussed in any existing glyphosate reviews. EFFSA and ECHA discussed 17 of the 34 statistically significant tumor sites and EPA only discussed 18.
According to Dr. Portier, it is time for an independent panel of scientists to evaluate the way in which the glyphosate science is reviewed. The current system is flawed. There is a need for regulatory agencies to reanalyze the data, and a need to publicly release all of the analyses and data to improve transparency of the process.
Dr. Portier closed his presentation by saying:
“This was just the evaluation for carcinogenicity. What about reproductive toxicity? What about developmental toxicity? I can’t answer that question because I don’t have the data for those areas and I can’t reevaluate it. In addition, what about the 450 plus other pesticides that have been reviewed? If there is one thing that is clear to me 2.5 years after the IARC review, had IARC not done this review, today I would not be here telling you that half the tumors were missed in the reviews that I was looking at…I would not be here to tell you that I am very concerned that this process is scientifically flawed.”
