On Oct. 12, 2017, European Parliament held a public hearing discussing the Monsanto Papers and glyphosate, the active ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup weed killer.
Glyphosate is the most widely-used agricultural chemical in the world. However, concerns have been raised over the chemical’s link to cancer.
In this hearing held by the Environment (ENVI) and Agriculture (AGRI) Committees in the EU Parliament, legislators, public health advocates, scientists and others convened to provide expert analysis on glyphosate, with particular attention paid to the stunning revelations from the Monsanto Papers, which can be viewed in their entirety here
The video above includes a question & answer (Q&A) session with Members of EU Parliament Marjana Petir (Croatia), Guillaume Balas (France), Bart Staes (Belgium) and Marc Tarabella (Belgium). The MEPs asked a series of questions regarding the Monsanto Papers to Carey Gillam (USRTK). David Kirkland of Kirkland Consulting answered other questions regarding the science of glyphosate.
In one exchange, Guillaume Balas asked Carey Gillam how to create a better regulatory system:
She replied, “...have more transparency. It is a real problem when they [regulators] are relying on secret studies, studies that are not to be shared, or peer reviewed or analyzed. It is a problem when regulators are relying more on the assessments, advice and counsel of the company that makes money off of these products than they are on their own internal experts.”
“This should not be a secret…these chemicals affect the public in very dramatic ways,” Ms. Gillam added.
One of the more heated moments in the hearing came when Marc Tarabella asked David Kirkland, a known Monsanto consultant, if he is credible as a scientist even though he has an “annual contract with Monsanto.”
Tarabella: “These rather dubious practices, are they acceptable when you are talking about hundreds of millions of citizens and their children?”
David Kirkland answered by saying he gets paid to offer professional advice for companies and organizations, no different than an accountant, an architect or a lawyer. “If that is unethical, then I would imagine there’s an awful lot of people earning a living around the world who would also be called unethical.”
