On Oct. 12, 2017, European Parliament held a public hearing discussing the Monsanto Papers and glyphosate, the active ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup weed killer.
Glyphosate is the most widely-used agricultural chemical in the world. However, concerns have been raised over the chemical’s link to cancer.
In this hearing held by the Environment (ENVI) and Agriculture (AGRI) Committees in the EU Parliament, legislators, public health advocates, scientists and others convened to provide expert analysis on glyphosate, with particular attention paid to the stunning revelations from the Monsanto Papers, which can be viewed in their entirety here
The video above includes a question & answer (Q&A) session with Members of EU Parliament Jose Inacio Faria (Portugal), Martin Hausling (Germany) and Sylvie Goddyn (France). The MEPs posed a series of questions to Tim Bowmer, Chairman of the ECHA Committee for Risk Assessment, and Martin Pigeon of Corporate Europe Observatory, both of whom made presentations.
One of the most asked about topics in this Q&A session was the need for independent studies on pesticides. Mr. Bowmer was asked about ECHA’s reliance on industry-funded studies in its review of pesticides over commissioning independent studies.
“Commissioning independent studies…certainly under classification legislation, we [ECHA] have no powers to commission independent studies,” Bowmer replied. “We classify on the basis of available information.”
“The current evaluation system is based on input for industry, which poses problems,” said Martin Pigeon, citing a need for regulators to use independent, public data in pesticide evaluations over studies performed and/or funded by industry.
