The central banks of BRICS member states (a growing list which also includes India, China, South Africa, along with several newcomers like the United Arab Emirates) have been aggressively accumulating gold. Gold is widely expected to play a key role in the system they are developing, similar to how gold was the basis of the Bretton Woods system that established the supremacy of the U.S. dollar after World War II at the Mount Washington Hotel in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire.
As India's Modi visits Russia and NATO convenes in the U.S., the conflict between the West and Russia over Ukraine has led to an intensification of efforts among BRICS countries to extricate themselves from American financial and economic hegemony. The great American diplomat George Kennan warned of this risk at the end of the Cold War as the U.S. pushed for continued NATO expansion.
