Di Blessing and Keith Blessing were inside their home in the quiet town of Torrington, roughly 65 kilometres southwest of Tenterfield, when an intruder launched a unprovoked and vicious assault early Thursday morning.
Reporting live from outside the Gold Coast University Hospital, Channel 9 reporter Bailey Kenzie provided the latest updates on the couple's recovery. Police allege that 34-year-old Joshua Tretoui violently stormed the couple's home, stabbing Keith in the stomach and slashing Di across the chest. The attacker initially fled the scene but returned a short time later, at which point homeowner Keith shot the intruder in an act of self-defence.
Breaking the family's silence, the couple's emotional daughter, Kathy Blessing, spoke publicly for the first time. Expressing immense gratitude for the overwhelming wave of public support, she confirmed that her parents are recovering well in hospital, stating, "It has been comforting to know we have the support of the wider community. They are recovering in the hospital here, getting excellent care."
The suspect, Joshua Tretoui, is currently waking up under police guard at Armidale Hospital, where he is recovering from his gunshot wounds. Detectives have formally charged him with attempted murder. While a bedside court hearing was originally scheduled, legal proceedings have been pushed back until he is medically discharged from hospital.
