1:22Now PlayingMelbourne’s public transport system is undergoing a long-awaited digital evolution, bringing a major convenience upgrade to millions of daily commuters. In this special report from Town Hall Station, Channel 9 Melbourne reporter Emily Rice breaks down the new tap-and-go updates designed to modernise the state's iconic but often criticised Myki ticketing infrastructure.
For the first time, Victorian rail passengers will have the freedom to ditch their physical, plastic Myki cards. Commuters can now simply tap onto the network using contactless payment methods, including digital bank cards, smartphones, and smartwatches. While cities like London and Sydney have enjoyed open-loop contactless payments for years, Victoria is finally catching up with its own digital card rollout to streamline the commuter experience.
However, as news presenter Lizzie notes, this digital transformation comes with a distinct catch. The new tap-and-go system is initially limited exclusively to full-fare passengers and is currently available on only about half a dozen select metropolitan and regional train lines. These include the Sunbury, Pakenham, Cranbourne, Werribee, Williamstown, Sandringham, Frankston, Stony Point, Bendigo, Gippsland, and Geelong lines.
Crucially, passengers catching Melbourne’s famous trams or buses will still be required to carry and scan their physical Myki cards, as the technology will not expand to buses and trams until later. The rest of the suburban rail system is expected to integrate the technology progressively over the coming weeks. Watch our complete breakdown to find out if your daily transit route is supported by the new system and what this means for the future of Victorian travel.
