10:47Now PlayingWelcome to 9News Australia. In this special commemorative report, we stand outside the hallowed gates of the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) as the nation pauses to say a final, emotional farewell to one of its greatest heroes, AFL icon and anti-MND crusader Neale Daniher AO. Following his peaceful passing after a historically courageous 13-year fight against Motor Neurone Disease, the broader Australian sporting community and thousands of everyday people have united to honour his life. The state funeral event serves as a powerful tribute to his decades of service as an Essendon player, Melbourne Football Club coach, and the visionary co-founder of FightMND, an organization that has raised over $190 million to date, including a recent $40 million contribution during the Queensland Cup.
Reporting live from Daniher's Way at the MCG, 9News presenter Sarah Abo brings together close companions and sporting legends who knew Neale best. Former Melbourne Demons star Russell Robertson shares deeply personal reflections, recalling his ten years being coached by Neale. Robertson highlights how the viral Big Freeze slide events encapsulated Neale's unique philosophy: that whilst the battle against 'The Beast' is serious, life should still be filled with joy and laughter.
The segment also features an exclusive interview with media personality and former Collingwood President Eddie McGuire, who reveals the historic backstory behind the very first Big Freeze clash, originally brainstormed alongside Neale and legendary philanthropist Bill Guest. From the initial idea of pouring ice over coaches' heads to the sights of 88,000 fans clad in blue beanies, the service reflects the unifying power of Neale's spirit. The official ceremony, overseen by Master of Ceremonies Hamish McLachlan, includes addresses from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan. Watch our full coverage as players form a guard of honour to mark this profound national milestone.
