5:58Now PlayingWelcome to 9News Australia. In this developing international report, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) has officially launched a wave of retaliatory military air strikes against tactical targets inside Iran. This critical kinetic escalation arrives in immediate response to the downing of a high-tech US military Apache helicopter by an Iranian drone over the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz. While the two American pilots were successfully rescued uninjured, the deliberate drone strike completely fractured ongoing diplomatic backchannels, which US President Donald Trump had noted were mere days away from sealing a comprehensive regional peace agreement.
Reporting live from Los Angeles, 9News U.S. Correspondent Reid Butler provides the latest updates from the Pentagon, detailing that the ongoing air strikes are explicitly categorized as "self-defence" maneuvers designed as a proportional response to unjustified Iranian aggression. The calculated shift in language signals that the White House is seeking a strategic diplomatic off-ramp from an unpopular, long-term war, rather than a full-scale regional invasion.
To analyse the tactical realities of the ongoing air strikes, 9News is joined live from San Diego by retired US Air Force Commander Glenn Ignazio. Ignazio examines the operational parameters of the counterstrikes and highlights how the data debrief from the surviving aircrew will shape the next phase of conflict. The panel also covers the complex geopolitical crosswinds across the Persian Gulf, assessing how these strikes affect regional actors, maritime security, and the internal political objectives of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Watch our full, comprehensive analysis for uptotheminute updates on naval deployments, missile trajectories, and international diplomatic fallout. | *Subscribe and 🔔
