The National Park Service (NPS) said Wednesday that Medano Pass Primitive Road is closed from Castle Creek to Medano Pass.
Rangers said all paved road areas, including around the campground, visitor center and the main dunes area, remain open and unaffected by the flooding on Wednesday.
"Heavy rain during a severe thunderstorm over the mountainous regions of the park in the afternoon [Tuesday] has created impassable conditions on the Medano Primitive Road," the NPS said in a statement.
NPS said park road crews and rangers' initial assessments of the road damage found deep washouts and sections of the road covered with woody debris.
Park rangers were able to enter the park from the east over Medano Pass from Forest Road 559 to assess the Medano Road for any additional damages and will contact any stranded parties from the impassible road conditions.
Rangers said ground conditions Wednesday morning were too wet for any safe or effective repair operations to start until the area dries out. Park staff said conditions will be updated as they change on the official park website and on social media.
