0:55Now PlayingA United Airlines flight reported a near miss with a drone while approaching Newark Liberty International Airport on Friday, prompting a Federal Aviation Administration investigation.
The crew of United Flight 1513 reported seeing the drone at about 5:20 p.m. EDT as the Boeing 737 was descending into Newark after departing from Key West, Florida.
In air traffic control audio, the pilot reported the aircraft “almost hit a drone” that appeared to be about 100 feet below the plane. The pilot described the drone as circular in shape and about 3 feet wide.
United said the aircraft, carrying 106 passengers and five crew members, landed safely at Newark around 5:30 p.m. Passengers deplaned normally at the gate.
According to air traffic control audio from around the same time, the crew of a United Express flight operated by Go-Jet Airlines also reported spotting a drone at about 2,000 feet while approaching Newark.
The FAA, which is investigating the incident, says it receives about 100 reports each month of drones operating near airports, despite regulations prohibiting unauthorized drone operations in controlled airspace or near manned aircraft.
