0:24Now PlayingSalmonella cases are surging across Colorado this summer, according to health officials with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.
Cases have jumped significantly –– to 250 cases this July compared to the average of 125 cases over the last five years during the same month, the health department said in a news release.
Health officials want people to be aware of the symptoms, especially because there are many types of Salmonella bacteria. Symptoms can include diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps, nausea and vomiting. Anyone who experiences these symptoms should contact a healthcare provider, CDPHE said.
Colorado has advanced foodborne illness surveillance capacity, with the Colorado State Public Health Laboratory using whole genome sequencing to compare the genetic fingerprints of the bacteria from people who test positive for it, the department said in the release.
The testing helps public health officials identify cases that may be connected and detect increases in illness early, according to the release.
