It looks a bit like it’s been struck by lightning – because essentially it has. Fractal burning is a method of decorating timber that involves passing high voltage electricity across the timber’s surface. The electricity burns the wood as it travels, creating intricate lightning-like designs.
It’s a rewarding but very dangerous art, that craftsman John Egglestone of northern Tasmania has been practicing for just over a year.
He works with specialty Tasmanian timbers like sassafras, blackwood and huon pine, and he knows to respect the risks of fractal burning by never, ever losing focus when on the job.
