3:32Now PlayingDuring the early summer breeding season, the skies, seas and sand at the Houtman Abrolhos Islands explode into sound with a squawking, swirling mass of hundreds of thousands of birds. These tiny travellers flock to the Abrolhos to nest in the mangroves, bushes and ground burrows.
With the area's recent declaration as a national park and State Government plans to push tourism, one man is keen to ensure the archipelago's seabird colonies are recognised and preserved.
Marine ecologist Dr Chris Surman has spent the past 29 years studying Abrolhos seabirds.
He's driven by a belief that the Abrolhos should be world-renowned and protected, not just for its gruesome shipwreck history and lucrative rock lobster industry, but for its riotous colonies of seabirds.
