But as the commercial fishing industry has grown, Indigenous fishers have seen their traditional fishing practices restricted – many have even been sent to jail under the state’s fishing laws - with devastating effects on the health and wellbeing of Yuin people.
The launch of a net fishing boat hand-built by a group of Yuin men at Wallaga Lake has marked an important milestone for Indigenous fishing rights.
The net boat project was funded by the NSW Department of Primary Industries and a special fishing permit was negotiated so the men can set the net once a week to catch fish for elders in the community.
After decades of conflict over fishing rights, the project reflects a new spirit of collaboration between state government and Indigenous fishers.
