4:26Now PlayingEnkhsuvd ‘Suvdaa’ Selenge once found a pearl in one of the thousands of oysters she shucked at The Oyster Barn, at Ceduna on South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula.
In the five years she ran the take-away and dine-in business she turned the iconic fish and chip shop into the pearl of Ceduna - It’s reputation carried by caravaners and tourists across the country as far as Byron Bay.
Having her own kitchen was a dream and her work honours her father who died when she was in her teens.
In Mongolia Suvdaa cooked noodles from the age of eight accompanying her Dad at 6am on the bus to deliver them to a take-away lunch diner.
She’d catch the bus back to go to school for the day.
Circumstances saw her a single mum of two children by the time she was 22 so she went to work and began her culinary journey.
She met her husband Peter Tully, an Eyre Peninsula local from the small community of Lock, in Mongolia when she worked in a restaurant.
They moved to Peter’s home town of Lock in 2014 and then to Ceduna after Suvdaa visited the far west town and fell in love with it.
Suvdaa sold The Oyster Barn in December 2022 to slow down after working 16-hour days.
But husband Peter says she hasn’t put her feet up, working a couple of jobs instead and working on plans for her next venture.
