The story behind it is nothing short of amazing.
It was the vision of one one post-war migrant, Cvetko Mejac and a team of just 12 men, half of whom were also recent arrivals to Australia, built it in just five months for less than 6000 pounds.
They dug footings and mixed all of the concrete by hand. When the newly crowned Queen Elizabeth, on her coronation tour, dropped by to see it opened, none of the men who built it were invited.
Jernej Balzelj, now 92, is the only surviving builder.
He still has the Box Brownie camera he used to document the build and his photos are part of an exhibition celebrating the story in Ulverstone’s HIVE cultural centre.
