Once restored to working condition, the Pine Islet Lighthouse on Mackay's coast will become the only fully functioning kerosene-powered lighthouse in Australia, and one of the last of its kind in the world.
It was commissioned in 1885 on nearby Pine Islet Island where it remained stationed for a century.
Hundreds of people are tied to the history of this beacon, including lighthouse keepers and their families, people delivering stores to the island, and mariners being guided to safe passage.
